After visiting more than 70 countries and learning to live out of a carry-on for weeks at a time, I’ve made every packing mistake in the book—literally. From cramming too many “just in case” outfits to forgetting something as simple as a charger adapter, I’ve found myself spending way over budget just to account for all the things I’ve forgotten.
Over the years (and countless gate checks later), I’ve learned that the right gear makes all the difference. Whether you’re a minimalist traveler or a chronic overpacker, here are the most common mistakes I’ve made—and the products that actually solve them—so you can become a carry-on-only traveler this year.
Carry-on Travel Essentials I Swear by
Mistake: Packing for “what if” instead of “what is”
Solution: A carry-on that keeps overpacking in check
Monos
I’ve absolutely been the person who throws in an extra pair of heels or three “backup” outfits that never see daylight. Overpacking doesn’t just weigh me down; it makes finding what I actually need so much harder. Plus, lugging an oversized suitcase through the train terminals in Europe (where there’s not an elevator in sight) is a nightmare on a multitude of levels.
My Monos Carry-on Plus makes it impossible to overpack because there just isn’t the space. The built-in compression straps and divided compartments force me to edit down my massive wardrobe, leading me to adopt a new motto: if it doesn’t fit, it’s not coming.
Mistake: Forgetting comfort for style (or vice versa)
Solution: Travel shoes that pull double duty
Amazon
I’m just a girl, after all, which is why I’ve packed shoes that I know will give me a blister just because they’re cute. I also just got back from a cruise where I packed tons of day outfits and leisurewear, without a single nice dress for formal night. Packing for style or comfort is the eternal travel struggle.
I’ve found that literally any pair of shoes from Rothy’s, like its travel-ready wool mules, can double as stylish and comfortable. Not only are Rothy’s shoes machine-washable, but they’re ultra lightweight, breathable, and incredibly supportive. Its casual sneakers are comfy and as cute with jeans as they are with dresses, while the comfy flats look good dressed up and down.
Mistake: Not using packing cubes
Solution: A packing cube system that maximizes suitcase space
Away
For years, I shoved clothes straight into my suitcase. It became such a problem that my best friend, who doubles as my photographer on trips, bought me multiple packs of packing cubes to help my suitcases from overflowing. Now, I can’t travel without them. And I even use them for my 7-year-old and her packing needs, too.
The Away Insider Packing Cubes keep everything organized by category, so you can find your swimsuit or sweater without unpacking your entire bag. Plus, they come in so many cute colors, so you can coordinate with your luggage.
Mistake: Skimping on a quality toiletry setup
Solution: A hanging toiletry bag that organizes everything
Calpak
I leave packing to the last minute (much to my own dismay), and my toiletries are often an afterthought. I throw them all into a bag (or a packing cube), zip it up, and hope none explode during the travel process. Maybe it’s my Type B personality, but even I find it frustrating to organize the things I use most.
The Terra Hanging Toiletry Bag not only saves space with an easy-to-use hook that can hang over doors and cabinets (great for small spaces), it also has tons of mini compartments that keep liquids from oozing and makeup from smudging. Plus, it keeps everything easy to grab in case TSA gives you grief.
Mistake: Not planning for power
Solution: One power bank that charges everything
Amazon
You can have the best itinerary in the world, but without a charged phone, it’s useless. I was just in Switzerland, and I completely forgot the adapter I needed to charge my camera and my phone. Twenty-five euros later, and I had a charger, but less money for souvenirs.
The Anker 737 Power Bank keeps multiple devices running and charging, from your phone to your noise-canceling headphones, without weighing down your bag. It’s also less than $100, so it doesn’t break the bank either.
Mistake: Ignoring weather realities
Solution: A compact umbrella that actually works
Davek NY
I’m the queen of overpacking but forgetting the one thing that will make my life a little bit easier on the road: a travel umbrella. Because there’s nothing worse than landing in London or Seattle only to see it’s raining and you need to book it to a taxi or the tube. Because one thing I’ve learned through many days on the road is that unpredictable weather can derail even the best itineraries.
The Davek Mini Umbrella is my go-to. It folds down small enough to fit in a tote but holds up to heavy rain and wind, and I’ve used it everywhere, from my hometown of Chicago all the way to Switzerland. It also comes in fun colors and with a 30-day warranty.
Mistake: Packing at the last minute
Solution: A modular packing setup that keeps everything visible
Monos
As I mentioned above, I’m a chronic overpacker and a chronic last-minute packer. If there were a company I could hire to pack for me, I would. However, I’ve gotten into so many issues with last-minute packing that have cost me too much money in buying replacements and too many headaches trying to mismash an outfit together for an event I didn’t consider. Rushed packing almost always leads to overpacking or underpacking.
Start laying things out a few days ahead so you can edit with a clear head. Tools like the Monos Compressible Set make it easy to see what you’re bringing and keep everything neatly organized, so no suitcase wrestling is required. The Cadence travel system is also imperative to keeping things like jewelry, wires, and toiletries ready to go, too.
