Freddie Flintoff says his team in Field of Dreams documentary puts injury hell into perspective

A tearful Freddie Flintoff has shed light on how his inspirational youngsters in his cricket documentary have put his injury hell into perspective.

The cricket legend has left fans in tears yet again after revealing his extremely difficult journey since experiencing a near life-ending crash on Top Gear in December 2022.

Last week, the father-of-three revealed it had been ‘so hard to cope’ with crippling anxiety that left him unable to leave the house in the months following the incident.

He also said the after effects of the crash might follow him ‘for the rest of my life’ and said he believes he ‘genuinely shouldn’t be here’ after he flipped a three-wheeled car at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome.

Now, the 46-year-old, who is fighting back tears, has told how he is ‘so proud’ of his youngsters.

Speaking in the show, he says: ‘You come to a place like this and see all these kids, it’s inspiring isn’t it? All of them have had hardship in their lives.

‘It puts things a little into perspective for me. We’ve all had hard things we’ve had to get through in our lives, me included and our lads. It pales into significance in comparison.’

Elsewhere in the programme, Flintoff’s team of youngsters decide to join Adnan, who is a refugee from Afghanistan, as he fasts for his religion.

Later, Flintoff then discusses Adnan’s journey of crossing borders and became tearful as he described the ‘horrendous’ beatings he received.

Responding to the show, one viewer said on X: ‘I don’t know if you’ve watched Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams on iPlayer, but it is so good for the soul.

‘Tonight’s second episode had me laughing and crying to the point that I thought my heart might burst into my throat. What a fantastic piece of television.’

Another added: ‘This #FreddieFlintoff programme is so moving. A real story of an Afghan refugee and their heartbreaking journey to asylum in the UK.

‘The support from the team is inspiring. There are still good people in the world.’

A third also commented: ‘This series is exceptional – best thing I’ve watched all year. Hats off to Freddie Flintoff. Incredibly inspiring, his honesty and bravery, commitment and dedication to the young people. A must see.’

Flintoff, who reportedly reached a £9million settlement with the BBC over the crash which was paid for by the broadcaster’s commercial arm, quit Top Gear in the aftermath and it has since been put on hiatus.

The cricketer-turned-broadcaster has been rarely seen in public since the incident, after his devoted wife Rachael, 42, reportedly ‘begged’ him to stay off work and take time to recover.

However, the broadcaster, which apologised to him in March 2023 for his injuries, brought him back for the new series of Field of Dreams, which sees him take a group of youngsters on a cricket tour to India.
