‘Fast & Furious’: Boy racers filmed doing doughnuts round roundabouts as police arrest two at car meet attended by 500

Boy racers have been filmed doing doughnuts on roundabouts at an unauthorised car meet in scenes likened to the Fast & Furious film franchise.

Police have arrested two men after the huge petrolhead meet up in Hampshire got out of control on Saturday night after 500 turned up.

Officers claimed they faced a ‘hostile’ crowd and that stones were hurled at them as they tried to control the racers who looked like they were trying to imitate the high-octane film series.

Photos from the scene showed hundreds of people gathered on the pavement watching the speedy cars swerve around the roundabout.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said that a member of the public was assaulted during the event.

It started in Winchester around 10.30pm before ending up in Southsea, Portsmouth, with huge crowds out on the street and locals complaining of noise.

One resident posted on social media that the noise ‘Sounds like a scene out of The Fast and The Furious to me’.

Revving engines, back-firing and wheel spinning were reported on social media as being heard across Winchester city centre.

One person said: ‘Looks like Winchester is host to a car cruise tonight. How inconvenient!’

Another asked: ‘Does anyone know what the loud banging noise is in central Winchester this evening? It’s driving our poor dog crazy.’

Police said a number of individuals were reported to be driving dangerously or in an anti-social manner, while there were also reports of public disorder and violence.

One man, a 19-year-old from Swanmore, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving after his vehicle was stopped in Fareham just after 10pm. He has been released under investigation.

Another man, aged 18 and from Tadley, has also been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle dangerously after it was alleged he was seen driving whilst people were hanging out of the windows of his car. He has been released on bail.

Police also seized three vehicles – a BMW M3, a Ford Fiesta and a Volkswagen Golf – during the event.

Chief Inspector Marcus Cator said: ‘We do recognise that not all car enthusiasts who meet up socially are involved in criminal or anti-social behaviour, however there were some individuals last night who demonstrated a clear lack of regard for the safety of not only themselves but other road users and the community at large.

‘Our efforts are now ongoing to review CCTV footage and all available evidence to establish the extent of any offences that occurred across the county, and deal with anyone identified as being involved.’

Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Donna Jones, said on X: ‘Large scale car meets are a total blight on decent people’s lives.

‘They’re criminal, dangerous and they must stop.’

Evidence was gathered by the police both from the air and ground, and a spokesperson said that those who committed driving offences would be sent notices of intended prosecution.
