Freddie Prinze Jr. set to reprise one of his most iconic roles in a highly-anticipated sequel

Freddie Prinze Jr. is returning to one of his most iconic roles that put him on the map more than two decades ago.

The 48-year-old actor was a staple of late-90s teen films with roles in hits like 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, She’s All That, Wing Commander, Down To You, Summer Catch and the Scooby-Doo movies.

He would later join hit shows like 24 and Star Wars Rebels to name a few, though he’s still perhaps best known for some of those earlier roles. 

One of those films that help launch his career, and will be getting an upcoming sequel, with Prinze Jr. just confirmed to join the cast.

The actor in question is none other than Freddie Prinze Jr., and he’s returning for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, according to Deadline.

The legacy sequel – which will blend both characters from the original film with younger characters played by a new cast – was first announced in February 2023.

That initial report claimed that both Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt were reprising their roles, though Prinze Jr. later stated he had never received an offer yet.

Now a year and a half later, his casting is confirmed, though the report added that Love Hewitt, ‘is still very much in negotiations to reprise the role of Julie James.’

Prinze Jr. returns as Ray Bronson, with a new cast that includes Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King.

While no plot specifics were confirmed, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson confirmed that the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer will be ‘canon.’

She did not mention, however, the 2006 straight-to-video sequel I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer likely won’t be considered part to of the franchise canon, since it featured none of the first two film’s original stars and had no connection to the story. 

Robinson will direct from a script by Sam Lansky and Kaytin Robinson, from an draft by Leah McKendrick, with Sony setting a July 18, 2025 release date.

No production schedule has been released, though if they intend to make that date next summer, filming will likely have to start fairly soon.

The original I Know What You Did Last Summer – written by Scream creator Kevin Williamson and directed by Jim Gillespie –  also starred Sarah Michelle Gellar (Prinze Jr.’s wife of 22 years) and Ryan Phillippe.

I Know What You Did Last Summer took in $125.3 million worldwide from just a $17 million production budget.

The fast-tracked sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer debuted a year later and only took in $40 million from a reported budget of $65 million.
