Iconic hit US show set for Netflix release this month sending fans into meltdown

Social media users are getting ready to add ‘XOXO’ in their text messages now that CW’s Gossip Girl is heading back to Netflix.

Twitter has been in a frenzy since Netflix announced the cult classic would be making its return to the streaming platform on October 29.

‘Gossip Girl is like the best show to ever binge watch. So addictive,’ an X user tweeted.

Netflix originally removed the series from its streaming platform in 2021, but it was available for streamers to watch on Max later that year.

The hit US series ended its six-season run in 2012, and critics have praised the show for its stars’ performances and fashion influence.

The television series centers around the lives of wealthy teenagers living in New York City who are being terrorized by a blogger known as Gossip Girl (Kristen Bell).

Best friends Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) and Blair Waldorf are two of those privileged and imperfect teenagers who do everything they can to succeed.

While they fight to attend the college of their dreams, Serena also stays busy in her on-and-off relationship with Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley).

Blair also finds herself in a complicated relationship with Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford), and later with Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) – a troubled young man and womanizer.

All five of them were seemingly in love/hate relationships throughout the entire show, but after Dan revealed he was Gossip Girl, all character arcs ended on high notes.

Other notable show stars were Taylor Momsen, Jessica Szhor, Kelly Rutherford, and Matthew Settle.

Several X users have been excited for the show’s return to Netflix, and more than one person praised specific seasons of the show.

‘Gossip Girl being on Netflix again right when it’s about to be fall is perfect,’ tweeted an X user.

Another X user tweeted: ‘The first two seasons of Gossip Girl were great.’

Others shared memories they made regarding the show and when they watched it for the first time.

‘The first time I ever discovered Gossip Girl was on Netflix. I used to drain my ‘unlimited’ data watching it until Straight Talk took my data and later I ended up getting a class action settlement because of it – xoxo!,’ an X user jokingly tweeted.

Not too many X users showed anger about the series’ return to Netflix, but a few of them weren’t afraid to diss Gossip Girl stars.

‘Please god please I hate blake lively i can not stand her in Gossip Girl her acting is horrible,’ an X user tweeted.

Others characters social media users couldn’t stand were Vanessa (Szohr), and Alison Humphrey (Susan Miner).

Rewatching gossip girl and man I hate Alison Humphrey… You left your whole family and you wanna come back like you never left,’ an X user tweeted.

A few X users also pointed out that Gossip Girl is still on Max, and streamers who don’t have Netflix accounts can still watch all six seasons.

Gossip Girl holds an 84 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on critic reviews from each season.

Critics who praised the first season of the show enjoyed the environment and culture all of the characters brought to the show.

‘There’s no way around how terrific that first season was. And the pilot – that pilot is just about perfect,’ a critic wrote for Vulture.

A reviewer from the Los Angeles Times wrote: ‘Oh the leggy glamour of it, the pretty rich girls at cocktail parties, the rumpled sexiness of those school uniforms, the gothic romance of stone-mansioned New York, which hasn’t gotten this much love since Sex and the City.’

Season 2 was even more incredible in the eyes of critics as its one of two Gossip Girl seasons that holds a 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

‘The pleasures of Gossip Girl needn’t be guilty. This melodrama isn’t high TV art, or even middling; but it’s dishy, farcical, and funny,’ a reviewer wrote for the Boston Globe.

Unfortunately, the show’s final season did not get as much praise, and more than one critic thought it needed some improvement.

‘With age comes wisdom? Whoever said that should have passed the memo to the Gossip Girl gang, because after six seasons,’ a critic wrote in a 2012 review for Entertainment Weekly.
