BCCI awaits Government approval as decision on Asia Cup 2025 expected by July 13

The Men’s Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled for September. After that, there will be no window to conduct the event due to bilateral commitments.

With just weeks to go for the Asia Cup 2025, all eyes are on the BCCI as they wait for a green light from the Indian government. The tournament, reportedly set to begin on September 5, has run into uncertainty, mainly over whether India will face Pakistan, given the tense political climate between the two nations ever since the Pahalgam terror attack.

As the official hosts of the tournament, the BCCI is under pressure to make the final call soon, but the decision now hinges on the Government of India’s approval.

Asia Cup to be confirmed soon

According to Cricbuzz, the Board of Control for Cricket in India is likely to make an announcement soon, but not before it receives a formal nod from the Ministry of External Affairs. The tournament is expected to be played in Sri Lanka or the UAE. However, BCCI is still unsure about facing Pakistan in a bilateral or multilateral context.

ACC mounts pressure on India?

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC), led by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, previously wrote to the BCCI, urging them to provide an immediate answer. With less than two months to go before the tournament begins, ACC’s media and sponsorship partners, including SonyLIV and TCM Sports, are reportedly concerned about the commercial timelines and marketing plans being derailed due to BCCI’s silence.

“We have been informed that in the absence of this information, their ability to plan effectively, allocate resources, and execute their campaigns is significantly constrained. In addition, to highlighting the challenges being faced by them, the media rights partner has highlighted obligations under the Agreement which commence 60 and 90 days prior to the commencement of the 2025 Tournament. Our sponsorship rights partner, TCM, have outlined the commercial concerns associated, particularly in terms of timelines required for effective monetization and activation planning,” ACC wrote to BCCI.

If the Asia Cup doesn’t go ahead in September, chances are slim of finding another window this year. The ACC’s financial health also hinges on this tournament, as it’s their only major revenue stream. However, the tentative schedule has been made for the tournament.

As per Times of India, the schedule for the 17-day long tournament has almost been finalized, with the opening clash set to take place on September 5 and the final on September 21. The report states that India will take on archrivals Pakistan for the first time on September 7 and the next probably on September 14. Further, the report also stated that most member nations are close to securing go-aheads from their respective governments to take part in Asia Cup 2025.
