Tyson Fury reveals his wife suffered a miscarriage the day before his heavyweight title defeat by Oleksandr Usyk in May

  • Fury has now revealed his wife suffered a miscarriage just before the bout

Tyson Fury has revealed his wife suffered a miscarriage the day before he was beaten by Oleksandr Usyk in May.

Fury and Usyk faced each other in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with the Ukrainian emerging victorious via split decision to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

But Fury may have had other things on his mind, and has now detailed a conversation he had with his wife, Paris, who had opted to stay behind in England, that left him concerned heading into the fight.

‘When she said she couldn’t come over, I knew there was a problem,’ Fury said, as quoted by The Mirror. ‘She usually comes out on fight week but she said she had high blood pressure.

‘I knew she wasn’t coming over on the Friday and [Saudi boxing chief] Turki Alalshikh offered us a private jet to get around the high blood pressure and said he would bring the doctor with her.

‘She said she couldn’t come and I asked her what was up and asked her to tell me but she wouldn’t. So I knew, I knew there was a problem. I said to my brother, “She’s lost that baby”. She never told me she had lost the baby, but I knew.

‘I am not making excuses but she was six months pregnant; it’s not like a small miscarriage at the beginning, you have to physically give birth to a dead child, on your own, while your husband is in a foreign country. I could not be there for her in that moment and that is tough for me. To go through that on your own, that isn’t good.

‘I have been with the woman for longer than I wasn’t with her, so it is hard that I couldn’t be there with her in that time. When I got back I got the inevitable confirmation that it was gone but she kept it to herself.’

Tyson and Paris have been married for 16 years and have seven children together. But they have suffered family heartbreak before on multiple occasions.

Paris gave birth to a stillborn baby in 2014 and miscarried four years later. She learned of her miscarriage on the same day Tyson made his long-awaited comeback after three years out the ring against Sefer Seferi in June 2018, but did not tell her husband until after he had got his hand raised.

Despite having concerns over his wife’s health as he entered the ring in May, Fury still put in a fine performance as he went toe-to-toe with Usyk over 12 enthralling rounds.

In a back-and-forth contest, it was Usyk who got the nod after scoring a knockdown in the ninth round.

But Fury will get his shot at redemption in December when the pair meet again in a rematch, with Usyk’s three heavyweight belts all on the line.

Usyk fired an early warning to Fury on Wednesday afternoon, posting on Instagram: ‘I will not leave you alone. Never’.

He then arrived at the launch press conference for their rematch with a mystery briefcase that contained a photo of him landing a huge punch on Fury in their first fight.

He proceeded to get Fury to sign the photo as he trolled the Brit, who took the joke in good spirits as he quipped that he ‘looked like Shrek’.

Usyk may have taken an early lead in the mind games, but Fury will believe his fists can do the talking when their rematch takes place on December 21.

He will also hope to have his wife at ringside this time, after she missed his first professional loss in tragic circumstances.
