Furious Roy Keane delivers alarming Man Utd verdict after Europa League final loss

Manchester United icon Roy Keane has been less than impressed with what he’s seen this season and let rip after watching Ruben Amorim’s side lose in the Europa League final

Roy Keane pulled no punches with a damning assessment of Manchester United after their failure to win the Europa League, insisting that their form in Europe has simply been ‘covering the cracks’ ahead of a huge summer for Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils have endured a horrific domestic campaign and are already guaranteed to finish lower than ever before in the Premier League. Their 1-0 loss against Tottenham in Bilbao on Wednesday means that not only will they end the season without a trophy, but also that they will not feature in Europe for just the second time in 35 years.

Further scrutiny is likely to fall on the shoulders of Amorim, who has failed to transform United’s fortunes since taking charge of the team back in November.

United’s run to the Europa League final has provided some respite for the former Sporting Lisbon coach – but Keane argues even that hasn’t been all that it seems after watching his old team limp to a chastening loss against Spurs.

“Just when you think things can’t get any worse for Man United. It’s been the story all year,” the Irishman said on CBS Sport after the game.

“They’ve been getting out of jail with European football and it’s been covering the huge cracks at Man United. All season they have been so easy to beat. They got lucky a few times in Europe and then tonight again, ultimately it’s not good enough. They didn’t show enough quality. Not enough options off the bench.

“If you’re depending on Harry Maguire [as an emergency striker] to get you out of jail you’re in trouble.”

A crestfallen Amorim insisted in his post-match press conference that he will leave Manchester United without a pay-off if the club’s powerbrokers decide he is not the right man to lead them forward after struggling to make an impact since his arrival.

He said: “I have nothing to show to the fans, so at this moment it’s a little bit of faith. So let’s see. I’m always open. If the board and the fans feel I’m not the right guy, I will go the next day, without any conversation about compensation. But I will not quit.

“I’m still really confident in my job and, as you can see, I will not change anything in the way I do things. I am always really honest. But I’m not going to talk about the future – tonight we need to deal with the pain of losing this match.

“It was clear we were the better team, but we managed not to score again. The guys tried everything to win the game and I think we were better than the opponent.”
