Late-night television is no stranger to being at the center of political crossfires, but this time, the jabs are flying faster than the punchlines. As Stephen Colbert’s talk show, often doubling as a satirical news program, faces one of the most unexpected small-screen shake-ups, many believe there is a connection to Donald Trump. The ripple effect has sparked reactions from both Hollywood and the president himself. Colbert recently flipped the bird at the POTUS, and now Jimmy Kimmel, a fellow late-night host, has joined in shading Trump. The latter must be feeling the heat.

Donald Trump, celebrating the cancelation of Stephen Colbert’s show, took to his social media platform to declare that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be next, followed soon by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He labeled the trio “untalented.” Colbert was the first to respond when his show returned on Monday for the first time since the cancellation news. Taking a mocking tone, he read Trump’s post aloud and probed, “How dare you, sir?” before playing a satirical clip in which he told the politician to “Go f— yourself.” Kimmel’s response came via Instagram Stories, where he wrote, “I’m hearing you’re next. Or maybe it’s just another wonderful secret.”
While he did not elaborate, the caption appeared to allude to Donald Trump’s alleged ties to disgraced Jeffrey Epstein. The Trump-Epstein link resurfaced recently after a Wall Street Journal report on July 17. Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert are not the only ones pushing back. The late-night community as a whole has rallied behind the latter, hurling criticism at both CBS and Trump.

Stephen Colbert gets support as CBS faces cancellation backlash
Hosts including Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart, John Oliver, and Seth Meyers gathered at the Ed Sullivan Theater to support their friend. Crashing Stephen Colbert’s latest episode, they offered words of encouragement while slamming CBS for citing low ratings as the reason for the cancellation. Fallon, crossing over from NBC, called Colbert “the sharpest” of the bunch. Meyers, meanwhile, praised him as “an even better person” than a comedian. Oliver expressed dismay over the cancellation while pointedly calling out the network.

The hosts later joined Stephen Colbert onstage for a playful Coldplay-style kiss cam moment. For those not in the loop, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert‘s cancellation has raised eyebrows due to its timing. CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global, is currently seeking FCC approval for a merger with Skydance while also settling a $16 million lawsuit with Donald Trump over a disputed 60 Minutes segment. Hence, as the curtain slowly falls on Colbert’s show, the solidarity among late-night hosts, and Jimmy Kimmel’s pointed jab, makes one thing clear: Trump may celebrate cancellations, but late-night’s resistance of him will just get louder.
