Man Utd considering ‘important’ change to Old Trafford pitch after ‘concerns’ raised

Manchester United could make a change to the Old Trafford pitch after the issue was raised during a recent fans’ forum, with the club looking to reduce the risk of injuries

Manchester United are investigating methods to modify the Old Trafford pitch following concerns raised at a recent fans’ forum. The Old Trafford playing surface last saw significant upgrades during the 1990s, when it was raised and surrounded by a ditch.

Yet this design has led to injuries throughout the years. The Sun has reported that the club will examine altering the pitch’s ‘perimeter’ to minimise injury risks.

At last week’s United fans’ forum, a supporter pointed out that numerous Premier League injuries have resulted from players colliding with advertising boards at high speed. A question was posed during the gathering about whether the club would ‘invest in transparent and soft material’ to cover them.

A United spokesperson replied: “The health and welfare of all players is of paramount importance.

“We will look into this risk and take appropriate action.”

The pitch is surrounded by a brick barrier, with a rubber-covered footpath positioned before the advertising hoardings.

This comes after the tragic news that Arsenal youth player Billy Vigar died from a ‘significant brain injury’ whilst playing for Chichester City at Wingate and Finchley FC.

The 21-year-old is believed to have struck a concrete wall.

That wall has since been torn down, with the Football Association (FA) expected to conduct an urgent safety review.

Wingate and Finchley have already implemented measures to enhance safety around the pitch.
