Mary Berry has been writing and developing recipes for decades, and she’s shared her “favourite” recipes to make at home – from simple cakes to more impressive bakes
Mary Berry has been crafting and perfecting recipes for decades, covering both sweet and savoury dishes. She revealed to The Times that creating recipes stems from a “desire to teach” and that her “all-in-one” technique was developed in the 1960s, which involves whisking all of the ingredients together at once, saving heaps of time.
The culinary legend and baking expert continues to use this approach today across many of her recipes. Mary has revealed her “all-time” favourite recipes, some of which are cakes and others which are slightly more challenging, but remain straightforward to rustle up.
1. Victoria sponge sandwich
An absolute British classic, and Mary’s “ultimate” favourite cake, the Victoria sponge sandwich is a brilliantly simple cake which anyone can knock up.
Made with baking spread, sugar, eggs and flour, Mary also incorporates freshly whipped cream and strawberry jam into her cake.
You can find the recipe here, reports the Express.
2: New York cheesecake with strawberries
This cheesecake recipe is Mary’s take on a classic vanilla baked cheesecake, boasting gorgeous flavour and texture.
She creates the base using digestive biscuits, demerara sugar and butter, whilst the filling delivers a delicious but gentle vanilla taste.
You can find the recipe in Mary’s latest book, Mary 90: My Very Best Recipes by Mary Berry.
3. Red velvet traybake
Red velvet is a beloved cake, prepared with buttermilk for a slight sharpness in the bake.
You’ll require proper red food colouring gel to achieve the brightness, and it’s scrumptious topped with some sweetened cream cheese. You can find the recipe in Mary’s latest book, Mary 90: My Very Best Recipes by Mary Berry.

4. Fabulous chocolate and cherry cake
Mary describes this cake as “impressive” and “perfect” for a celebration. It features a rich chocolate sponge with a cherry and cream filling, finished with a delicious chocolate ganache.
Whilst it might appear complex, it’s guaranteed to wow your guests.
You can find the recipe in Mary’s latest book, Mary 90: My Very Best Recipes by Mary Berry.
5. Lemon meringue pie
This timeless pudding can be prepared using several shortcut techniques, but if you’ve got the time to create your own pastry, it’s absolutely worthwhile. Featuring a zesty lemon filling, Mary’s pie is crowned with a sweet meringue.
You can find the recipe here.
The chef has released over 70 cookbooks since her first publication in 1966, and her latest has just hit the shelves. Mary’s new book is available for £14 at Waterstones, Amazon or TGJones.
Numerous bakers have already secured copies of the book, with some sharing their reviews. User B and P mum remarked: “Although this is a beautifully produced book, not to mention a great idea, just how many recipes for lasagne does one book need?”.
User Sophie noted: “Unfortunately, the text is so small that it will be impossible to reference the recipes whilst I cook.”
Nevertheless, others adore the new publication with one Instagram comment stating: “This will be one to pass through the generations.”
