Melania Trump prioritises ‘own protection’ over Donald after major Epstein claims

US President Donald Trump claimed he knew nothing about his wife Melania’s press conference regarding her connection to the late child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein

Melania Trump’s impromptu denials about any malicious ties to the late child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein signals the First Lady is keen to protect her legacy over her husband’s, an expert told the Mirror.

The First Lady stunned the world when she brought the Epstein saga back to the forefront amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East that have dominated talking points for the past month. In a surprise announcement at the White House on Thursday, Melania denied any connections to Epstein and said online rumours were “mean-spirited attempts to defame my reputation.”

She referred to a 2002 email she sent to Ghislaine Maxwell where she wrote for her to “give me a call when you are back in NY”. It is unclear what prompted Melania to make the announcement.

Scott Lucas, professor at the Clinton Institute at University College Dublin, said the announcement was Melania’s attempt to put some distance between her and her husband, who is taking in the polls. “I think that takeaway from Melania’s sudden appearance is that she’s trying to get a bit of space, not just from the administration, but from her husband, over what has happened in the Epstein [Files],” he told the Mirror.

“But also, I think this is a clear signal that Melania is saying, my priority is not the protection of my husband, my priority is the protection is me. That she does not want any type of involvement that could bring her down, not only the basis of what has been released but what might be released.”

Lucas said the email exchange between Melania and Maxwell showed they spoke in friendly terms and that her comments that Epstein did not work alone as well as wanting his victims to be heard was in contrast to statements out of the Trump administration. “I think in terms of Melania, it’s like she’s taking on a position which is very, very distinct from where the Trump folks are. And of course, the Trump folks at this point are in a position where Pam Bondi is going to have to be replaced because she’s been dismissed by Trump, in part because she couldn’t make Epstein go away,” he added.

Lucas said of the sudden press conference: “I mean, at least this is an embarrassment, and were we not in such a fraught period of time, you know, where we’ve got U.S.-Iran talks, which are due to start in Pakistan this weekend, we’ve gotten Israel with its war on Lebanon, you know we’re all sort of scrambling in terms of what happens there next. That sort of blunts at least the significance of what Melania has done, but it certainly doesn’t make it go away. It puts down a marker. I think the way to look at this broadly in terms of a marker regarding Trump’s in a political position.

Melania’s comments undermining her husband’s position on the Epstein Files could also be a move to assert herself after standing by Trump following humiliating allegations he had a sexual encounter with adult film star Stormy Daniels in 2006, four months after the birth of their son Barron. Lucas continued: “So here she is having stuck in by Trump, but most of her life is away from Washington.

“It’s New York, it’s in Florida. She has these other areas she could carve up like the interspersing children’s safety, anti-bullying, et cetera. But now it’s like, well, she doesn’t necessarily have to be simply the supportive wife to Donald Trump if this is personal for her, which I think it is. How much we see of that in the months to come. You know, we’ll see.”

Melania’s White House announcement could not come at a worse time for Trump, who has seen his popularity tank with the American public. Currently the US President faces a dismal 56.6 per cent disapproval rating with 39.6 per cent approving, according to polling averages as of today (Friday, April 10).

Trump had been slammed by supporters as well as critics over his handling of the Epstein Files after claiming he would release them while he was on the campaign trail in 2024. But after returning to office, Trump has since claimed, without evidence, that it is a Democrat hoax.
