Scott Pilgrim: The Animated Series on Netflix had a lot riding on it. The voice cast was star-studded, with names like Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and a highly anticipated return to the universe, the show had generated a buzz among fans who eagerly awaited its debut. The vibrant animation and the callbacks to the original Scott Pilgrim film made it a nostalgic treat. However, despite the excitement, Netflix announced its cancellation after just one season.

Some speculated that low viewership and Netflix’s ongoing strategy to scale back on animated content contributed to the decision. While the platform did not provide detailed reasons for the cancellation, the outcome left many wondering what might have been. The show’s closure sparked an outcry from the fanbase, who were hoping for more of Scott, Ramona, and the rest of the gang.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin (Max)

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin on Max quickly built a dedicated fanbase with its unique blend of teen horror and mystery, offering a fresh, darker take on the iconic series. Viewers were drawn to its compelling characters, suspenseful twists, and a more mature tone than the original. But after only two seasons, the rebooted show was cut abruptly, leaving fans frustrated and heartbroken. The cancellation caught many off guard, as the show seemed to be gaining momentum and setting up further plotlines.

Despite its loyal following, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin was canceled after two seasons because of viewership declines and the streaming platform’s decision to restructure its content offerings. The sudden end left unanswered questions, and the show’s promise of further seasons now feels like a lost opportunity.

Kaos (Netflix)

Kaos on Netflix had fans excited with its bold take on Greek mythology, blending fantasy with dark comedy in a way few other shows dared to. The unique premise, filled with gods, goddesses, and unexpected humor, quickly caught the attention of viewers, who praised its originality and world-building. However, despite its creative potential, Netflix cancelled the show after just one season, leaving many fans disappointed. The abrupt cancellation got viewers expressing their desire to see more of this intriguing world.

The series had just begun to explore its fascinating characters and storylines, and the sudden end left viewers wondering what could have been. Kaôs seemed to fail after one season, as ratings were dull, and viewers were not as welcoming as anticipated to the fantasy series.

That 90’s Show (Netflix)

Within only two seasons, in 2024, That ’90s Show was axed by Netflix. Based on the nostalgia-tinged sequel series of the classic That ’70’s Show, it picked up some original characters, including Red and Kitty Forman, in addition to introducing a whole new generation of teens navigating the 1990s. It still had a nostalgic charm, but the ending received a lukewarm reception, especially after the second season’s treatment into two parts in 2024.

Kurtwood Smith, actor playing Red, thanked viewers and let everyone know that there was no third season of the show. He also announced plans to “shop the show” to other platforms hoping his chances to continue the story somewhere else. The move reflects Netflix’s hard time to engage viewers through its comedy series despite having a brand name already.

Our Flag Means Death (Max)

Our Flag Means Death, the pirate comedy that mixed humor with an unexpected romance, quickly captured the hearts of viewers with its unique take on pirate life and unconventional characters. Its second season was met with rave reviews, further solidifying its fanbase. However, to the surprise and anger of many, the show was canceled shortly after its second season, leaving numerous plotlines unresolved. Fans expressed their dissatisfaction across social media, rallying for the series to continue.

This cancellation felt especially unfair to viewers who had connected deeply with the characters and especially the themes of LGBTQ+ that were brought together in a fresh new way. The series ended as HBO Max decided to allocate their resources to other productions and hold the rest of the series, though fans seemed passionate about the show.

Tokyo Vice (Max)

Tokyo Vice, based on the memoir of an American journalist working in Japan, quickly became a hit for its gripping crime drama and portrayal of the underground world of Tokyo. The show earned praise for its atmospheric setting, complex characters, and compelling performances. Yet, despite its success and positive reception, Max canceled the series after just two seasons, leaving fans shocked and frustrated. Many took to social media to express their anger over the cancellation, citing their deep investment in the story and its unresolved plotlines.

This crime drama was canceled after two seasons, and Max explained the cancellation came down to underwhelming ratings and changing content priorities. Leaving many fans to question the further explorations of this dark, intriguing world could have been made.

Outer Range (Prime Video)

The cancellation of Outer Range on Prime Video after its second season did not leave much to hope for this series. The show, a blend of neo-Western and sci-fi elements, captivated audiences with its mysterious black void and family drama centered around rancher Royal Abbott, played by Josh Brolin. Despite a 92% rating for its second season on Rotten Tomatoes and a growing fanbase, the show was cut short.

Prime Video canceled the sci-fi western due to inconsistent viewership, despite praise for the performances, leading to an abrupt end. Followers of the show took to criticize Prime Video’s tendency to cancel shows prematurely. Some declared they would no longer invest in Amazon originals due to the repeated cycle of unresolved cliffhangers.

Life & Beth (Hulu)

While Amy Schumer’s dramedy Life & Beth was a beautiful blend of humor and personal exploration, which connected with audiences, the series met its end with Hulu after two seasons in 2024. The show, loosely based on Schumer’s own experiences, followed Beth as she navigated her biggest life changes, exploring growth, relationships, and self-discovery. Despite the critical praise and steady fanbase, the show was unable to achieve high viewership numbers and never broke into major streaming charts.

Fans of the show were saddened, given the rich storytelling and relatable characters,  but the cancelling of the movie fits into Hulu’s trend of cutting underperforming original content as the platform rebalances its focus on programs that perform well in terms of viewership.

Minx (Starz)

After having a troubled production life and even being saved once from cancellation, Minx met its final end at Starz in 2024. The feminist comedy, set in the 1970s, followed Joyce Prigger and her journey to create an erotic magazine for women. Despite a dedicated fanbase and critical praise for its nuanced themes and period-specific humor, the show struggled to maintain momentum. Initially canceled by HBO Max in 2022 as part of a cost-cutting measure, Minx was rescued by Starz for a second season, but challenges like limited promotional opportunities due to the SAG-AFTRA stood against its continuation.

Followers of the show did express frustration over the unresolved cliffhangers and the premature conclusion to the storylines of beloved characters like Joyce and Doug. This decision marks increasing unpredictability in the streaming industry, ending yet another unfinished story for viewers.

American Born Chinese (Disney+)

Disney+ canceled American Born Chinese after one season, leaving many of its viewers disappointed. This adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s award-winning graphic novel smoothly blended fantasy with heartfelt stories that spoke to issues of cultural identity. Viewers praised the unique perspective, a well-crafted cast including Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, and the dazzling visuals. That said, the series remained underappreciated, never even gaining large numbers of viewership to help justify its continuation. The series never performed well on streaming charts, leading Disney to air the first episode on traditional TV. Neither did that do well enough to save the show.

The show ended in a major cliffhanger, and important storylines surrounding Jin and the protagonist as well as the mythological elements woven into his life remained unclear. Some critics criticized the abrupt finish while talking about the creativeness of the show along with its cultural importance.

Behind the decision to pull the plug are industry shifts, streaming strategies, and market changes lie decisions that do not always align with the favorite shows of viewers.
