As X-Men Live Action Return in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, Fans Shed Tears for The Animated Show

Fans have been in a trance with the long-awaited anticipation of Deadpool & Wolverine as it steers through the years of wait with its July release. However, amidst the excitement surrounding the integration of X-Men characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s flagship project, there has been a disappointment in the realm of animation. The recent update on X-Men ‘97 has left fans mourning, as the television adaptation falls short of expectations just as the cinematic universe prepares to embrace these beloved characters.

For a long time, comic book geeks were preoccupied with connecting the dots between X-Men ‘97’s finale and the beginning of Deadpool & Wolverine, unaware that the world of animation would soon face fan discord. Recently, Deadline reported that Matthew Chauncey has been appointed to write the third season of Disney’s X-Men ‘97, Marvel Animation’s revival of the classic ‘90s animated series. Chauncey will collaborate with X-Men ‘97 director Jake Castorena, who has been involved with the project since its inception.

Chauncey takes over from Beau DeMayo, who departed from Marvel earlier this year before the premiere of X-Men ‘97 on March 20, after completing work on the first two seasons. For fans, this rapid shift in writers from the first and second seasons to the third has sparked disbelief and discontent. Although the third season is already in development, fans have been adamantly vocal about their dissatisfaction with the transition. 

Consequently, many have taken to the internet to express their disapproval, lamenting the change by equating it to the end of an era.

Comic book enthusiasts disapprove the latest X-Men ‘97 transition amidst Deadpool & Wolverine’s arrival

With just weeks remaining until the much-anticipated debut of the mischievous duo, Wade Wilson and Logan, in Deadpool & Wolverine, few anticipated the sudden upheaval in the animated universe from the clawed-out clan. However, the announcement of Matthew Chauncey replacing Beau DeMayo as the writer for X-Men ‘97 has ignited a wave of fan discontent aimed at Disney headquarters, with criticism pouring in to highlight the extent of negativity.

Many fans appeared skeptical of Chauncey’s ability to continue the narrative torch from DeMayo in the upcoming season of X-Men ‘97, citing his previous credits to support their doubts. 

Conversely, some fans were willing to give Chauncey a fair chance, pointing out that DeMayo’s earlier writing credits were not particularly impressive either. A few fans have even compared the work portfolios of both writers, ultimately siding with Chauncey. Despite this division, it is clear that fans need more reassurance than mere comparisons to determine whether Chauncey can live up to DeMayo’s talent, and it looks like only time will say so.
