Folie à Deux,’ Calls It a Fresh Epoch

This year, the musical landscape is all set to bleed into the cinematic tapestry as Lady Gaga takes the torch of Harley Quinn from Margot Robbie in Joker: Folie à Deux. While it remains to be seen if the songstress can mirror the success of her musical ventures in this anti-heroic journey, for Gaga herself, the transition is too overwhelming to predict what is written in her stars with her touchdown in the Gotham City. Nonetheless, what she is certain of is that partnering with Harley Quinn represents a significant departure for Gaga, potentially marking a crucial turning point in her career.

Consequently, although fans have enjoyed seeing Gaga on screen before, this upcoming project still seems like a venture into uncharted territory for her.

Lady Gaga recently spoke with Empire for a cover story on Joker: Folie à Deux, discussing how the film incorporates music as the first jukebox musical to emerge from the DCEU. While Gaga is famous for her extensive musical background, her stack of credits also includes notable film roles in A Star Is Born and House of Gucci. Yet, she describes Joker: Folie à Deux as “unlike anything” she has done before, reflecting on the challenges she navigated as someone who has been a performer all her life.

Gaga noted that her biggest challenge was distinguishing between her persona as Lady Gaga the performer and the character she needed to portray as Lee. While on stage, Gaga has instinctively infused music with meaning similar to how she now approaches dialogue, this project required her to treat music as merely an extension of dialogue. It was a new experience for Gaga, who had to resist her instincts, set aside technicalities, and let go of her previous knowledge of the art form to fully embody the character in the film.

Lady Gaga is carefully expanding her skills by learning and unlearning techniques to ensure Joker: Folie à Deux achieves the blockbuster status it deserves. As the release date approaches, more and more updates come down trickling, including its run-time.

Joker: Folie à Deux has just released a new trailer, featuring a love-struck Harley Quinn played by Lady Gaga alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. While fans are already familiar with the film’s R-rating and musical elements, new reports have revealed its run-time. As the release date approaches, the film is set to have its world premiere at the upcoming Venice Film Festival. According to the event’s official listing, the movie runs for 138 minutes, or 2 hours and 18 minutes.

This makes it slightly longer than the original Joker from 2019, which had a run-time of 2 hours and 2 minutes. Phoenix’s performance in the first film earned him an Academy Award, and Gaga’s brief appearances in the trailers have already generated Oscar buzz. Now, it remains to be seen if this buzz will materialize as Lady Gaga ventures into uncharted territory to bring Joker’s story back to the big screen.
