While the Marvel which generates a couple of high-production films to layer on top of its already hefty filmography now barely remains a mystery to anybody, the marvel where a sequel manages to climb the same pedestal as its predecessor would have become a forgotten tale if not for Deadpool & Wolverine. But despite Ryan Reynolds‘ best R-rated efforts to prove otherwise, Joker: Folie à Deux has only cemented the case further.
Saved from the ‘so bad that it is good’ category curtsy of Todd Philips’ direction, the movie could not even tick the green boxes when looking at it separately from its predecessor. But with the year 2024 already having accumulated enough sour cinematic tales, does Joker: Folie à Deux really stand as the worst comic movie?

The superhero genre owing to the overwhelming amount of spandexes and laser powers has churned out more bad content than a coffee machine. Admittedly, it’s no small feat to dazzle an audience with heroes who look like action figures and villains resembling rejected Roblox designs. Yet, despite sidestepping these clichés, Joker: Folie à Deux managed to stumble all on its own. And so, for consideration, and possible relief, here is a list of comic book films so catastrophically bad that walking out of the theater may have been the wisest plot twist of all.
Madame Web
Hitting the iron while it is still hot, the list of worst comic movies has to start with Madame Web released earlier this year. Despite the release date aligning with Valentines Day, the unearthing of the title resonated with the cupid’s bow only when it stings. Much like Joker: Folie à Deux, Madame Web collected a star-studded cast that audiences believed could do no wrong, at least before witnessing the movie.
The thriller was based on one of Marvel’s highest rated heroines, and also made way for other primary characters to lead their journey into Marvel such as Black Cat. While the excitement for what these fresh set of actors end up doing in Marvel remains, the movie in itself was a terrible mess.
Green Lantern
Another case of a movie failing to pack a punch at the box office and the actors making up for it by throwing a few jabs post its release, the Green Lantern, is a debacle in one. Especially after looking at the wonders Ryan Reynolds pulled as Deadpool in Marvel, the movie was painted in the worst shade of green.
Despite the character being genuinely adored by the masses, the movie in itself failed due to a barrage of reasons ranging from bad execution to gimmicky writing and more. With a 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie remains one of the worst comic movies of all time, with little to no justice done to the character despite a whole DC being painted on a new canvas.
Suicide Squad
As Joker: Folie à Deux faces unprecedented heat for seemingly butchering the revered legacy of Joker curated by the late Heath Ledger, now is a better time than ever to remember that it would not be the first movie to do so. Unfortunately, even in the case of worst Joker adaptations, Joker: Folie à Deux remains defeated owing to Suicide Squad.

While it does stand tall among the worst rated comic movies of all time, again with a spectacular cast that fans believed could do no wrong, the Suicide Squad still managed to pat a few feathers with its set of eccentric characters. The haywire aesthetic of the movie presented an allure that the new generation could not help but devour. However, that is not to say that the movie impressed anyone in the least bit.
Despite all these movies breaking the glass ceiling in terms of being the worst comic movies of all time in their own unique way, Joker: Folie à Deux still holds a special place that will probably remain untouched for the coming decades. The movie managed to churn out a ‘D’ score from the movie going audience, as per a poll conducted by CinemaScore, the lowest every for a comic book movie.
