“It is somewhere in between”- Lady Gaga Refuses to Call ‘Harlequin’ Her Next Studio Album for an Iconic Reason

Lady Gaga has transformed the record industry into her very own empire, kicking things off by dazzling audiences at open mic nights. But her quest for liberation found residence in a world beyond music called cinema, proving she is not just a pop icon but a bona fide superstar. While the world has been spellbound by her performances on screen before, this October, she is about to take on the role of Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux. And guess what? Her superstar brain could not resist sprinkling some of her own musical magic into this film, dropping a soundtrack album called ‘Harlequin.’

Despite that, Gaga is not calling it her next album for a reason that alone outlines her creative foresight.

Lady Gaga might have wrapped up filming for Joker: Folie à Deux, but she is just getting started with Harley Quinn. In a recent Zoom chat with Rolling Stone Magazine, Gaga opened up about her deep connection with her character, which inspired her to drop the companion record ‘Harlequin’ with a little help from her fiancé, Michael Polansky. But she is not calling it her next studio album. Instead, she feels “it is somewhere in between.”

This album is a true Lady Gaga record inspired by both her character and her vision of what womanhood can be, a genre-bending masterpiece that blurs the lines of pop music. Gaga promises her next studio album will stick to pop, but she playfully refers to ‘Harlequin’ as “LG 6.5.” She also reminisced about her late collaborator Tony Bennett, recalling how youthful he was while singing music like this.

The songs chosen for the film resonated with her so much that she wanted to explore their meaning through her lens and what they could represent today. For the ones who are ready for Joker on screens, they might get ready for it to recur on their playlists too.

Lady Gaga just dropped her soundtrack album, ‘Harlequin’ on September 27 through Interscope Records, serving up a perfect companion to the upcoming R-rated musical thriller Joker: Folie à Deux. She teased the album and unveiled the cover art on Instagram on September 24, complete with a link to pre-order the CD, vinyl, and digital formats from her web store.

After the film’s premiere in London, Gaga threw an exclusive, super-secret listening party where lucky fans got to hear the soundtrack for the first time. The album features tracks from the film along with some original tunes for the film, including a new song for the album titled ‘Happy Mistake.’ Fans already knew they were in for a musical treat with this film, and with Gaga’s magical touch on the companion album, Joker: Folie à Deux is all set to make a big splash in the latter half of the year.
