At Asia Cup 2025, Suryakumar Yadav managed just 72 runs at a strike rate of 104. Now, he has opened up on his poor form.
While speaking to Ravichandran Ashwin, Sanju Samson revealed the sheer backing Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav gave to him, saying that he won’t be dropped until he scores 21 ducks. Then after the Asia Cup 2025, Abhishek Sharma also credited the Indian T20I captain for giving him a rope of 15 ducks. Incidentally, both Samson and Abhishek have done remarkably well and haven’t recorded any ducks this year. But, on the flip side, SKY himself has been out for zero three times!
Suryakumar Yadav’s SKY-Fall
Recently, Suryakumar got candid about his poor form. While speaking to Vimal Kumar in an interview, the Mumbai Indians (MI) star batter was asked about his own dwindling batting form. While his captaincy and camaraderie with head coach Gambhir has been laudable, runs haven’t been coming off his bat. For a player who has over 300 T20 innings and 8692 runs, Suryakumar has been in awful form for India.
In India’s victorious Asia Cup campaign, the skipper managed only 72 runs across six innings at a strike rate of just 104.22. His returns included four single-digit scores, including the final where he lasted five balls for one run before miscuing Shaheen Afridi straight to mid-off.
For a player who had looked untouchable in franchise cricket, the contrast was jarring. He doesn’t look anywhere close to his best. There was a reason why he was once considered in India’s all-time T20 lineup even after playing for a couple of years. But, now 35, his prime might be well past him. This year, he has managed just 100 runs at an average of 11.11.
Till when will Suryakumar carry his bad form?
Speaking on his poor form, Suryakumar clearly stated that he won’t be changing the team environment due to his lack of runs. Currently, his lean patch is coinciding with Team India doing so well. In fact, under him, India have won 25 out of 29 T20 internationals. So, SKY has clearly stated that he is doing his preparations right and won’t dwell much till the Men in Blue are in correct path.
“There is no shame in telling the truth. I had started the Asia Cup well, scoring some 40-odd not out, or something. After that, I was batting well, but the runs were not coming. I know that as long as my preparation and process are right, the runs will come sooner or later. If my form is affecting the team, then I will start dwelling on it. But the team is doing good; the atmosphere is good. I can’t let my form affect the team atmosphere,” Suryakumar Yadav said on Vimal Kumar’s YouTube channel.
You” see Suryakumar next in action in the five-match T20I series against Australia, starting October 29. With the pitches Down Under known for more pace-friendly, Suryakumar should love to bat on those conditions.

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

2021-2023 | 57 | 2141 | 117 | 45.55 | 171.55 | 4 | 17 | 123 |
2025 | 11 | 100 | 75 | 11.11 | 105.26 | 0 | 4 | 3 |
Despite the recent struggles, the Indian team management still has faith in him. When he’s on form, he can single-handedly turn the game around, and that’s a huge asset. Suryakumar’s leadership skills really shone through in the Asia Cup final, even when runs weren’t coming easily. With the T20 World Cup just around the corner, the Indian team is banking on him to deliver. He’s got the prep work done, and now it’s just about getting the runs going again.
