- The Glendronach has released 2025 editions of its 30- and 40-year-old single malt Scotch whiskies, both aged in sherry casks.
- For the first time, the 30-year-old expression includes whisky matured in Amontillado sherry casks, adding notes of toasted hazelnut and creamy oak.
- Limited to 5,000 bottles worldwide for the 30-year-old and just 300 for the 40-year-old, both whiskies carry premium prices and extremely limited U.S. allocations.
With a history dating back to 1826, The Glendronach is renowned for its Highland single malt Scotch, which is almost exclusively aged in sherry casks. The distillery’s new 30- and 40-year-old single malt Scotch whiskies continue that tradition — though one offers a spin that is likely to surprise longtime fans of the brand.
The 2025 editions of The Glendronach 30-Year-Old and 40-Year-Old whiskies each feature single malt aged in both Spanish Oak Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, a typical blend for the distillery. Unsurprisingly, both are highly limited releases with premium price tags to match. But this year, the 30-year version incorporates whisky aged in Amontillado sherry casks, a first for single malts under The Glendronach banner.
“With the 30-Year-Old, we have composed a symphony from our most historic sherry cask styles,” says The Glendronach master blender Rachel Barrie, in a press statement. “Three decades of maturation have resulted in a sublime and charming Single Malt, with generous layers of rich and complex character. It is the ultimate expression of our dedication to the art of sherry cask maturation.”
According to the brand, the addition of Amontillado sherry adds elements of “toasted hazelnut and mellow creamy oak” to a profile already rich in glazed cherry and sultana cake, along with cinnamon raisin-nut toffee. Bottled at 46.8% ABV (93.6 proof), The Glendronach 30-Year-Old has a suggested retail price of $1,300 and is limited to 5,000 bottles worldwide — with 1,300 bottles earmarked for U.S. distribution.
In contrast, The Glendronach 40-Year-Old upholds the brand’s traditional aging profile, with the whisky spending more than four decades maturing in Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Barrie describes it as “the ultimate expression of The Glendronach.”
Brand notes highlight a nose big on black cherry, stewed plum, and blackberry, along with chocolate cake. The palate leans toward blackcurrant and prune — hallmark notes for their well-aged expressions — before revealing cinnamon and chocolate espresso.
The Glendronach 40-Year-Old is bottled at a natural cask strength of 43.9% ABV (87.8 proof) and has a suggested retail price of $6,700. Only 300 bottles will be released, with 70 coming to the U.S. market, making it one of the distillery’s rarest and most allocated current expressions.
