Katy Perry under investigation for possible environmental damage to Spanish dunes where she filmed music video Lifetimes

Katy Perry is reportedly under investigation for causing possible environmental infringement while shooting her latest music video for Lifetimes in the Balearic Islands.

The Fireworks songstress, 39 – whose recent video was compared to her 2010 hit track, Teenage Dream – filmed the nearly four minute clip on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera.

Throughout the music video, Perry can be seen dancing and singing along with friends at the tropical location and also at a crowded nightclub.

However, the Balearic Government Government Department of the Environment is now looking into whether the performer and her crew possibly damaged protected dunes on the islet of s’Espalmador, per the Majorca Daily Bulletin.

At one point in the clip, Perry grooved to the track in a seemingly roped off area near the ocean – with the crew and film equipment also nearby.

DailyMail.com has reached out to Katy’s reps for comment.

A preliminary proceeding has officially begun as the department further investigates the possible violation.

According to the outlet, the production company involved with the shoot did not acquire or apply for permission to film in the specific area.

In a press release obtained by Billboard, however, the department stated that the music video was not a ‘crime against the environment’ due to filming being permitted if a request is made.

The dunes of s’Espalmador are ‘highly valuable in ecological terms’ and the ‘best preserved’ area located on the Balearic Islands in Spain, per Illes Balears Travel website.

The islet of s’Espalmador as well as Ses Illetes are a part of the Salinas de Santa Pola nature preserve, a ‘natural 15.000-hectare site that protects southern Ibiza and northern Formentera.’

The visuals for Lifetimes officially dropped earlier this month on August 8, and garnered comparisons to her 2010 song, Teenage Dream, by fans.

It comes shortly after her previous single, Woman’s World, notably flopped and bombed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart upon its release last month in July.

The song – which is geared towards woman empowerment – landed the number 63 spot in the first week.

Woman’s World failed to reach top spots on other charts as well, such as only peaking at number 65 on the Global 200 chart on number 47 on the U.K. chart, per Variety.

On Spotify, the song reached a number 110 spot on the U.S. chart and number 58 on the global list.

A source told DailyMail.com soon after the single flopped on the music charts that Katy was ‘freaking out’ and held crisis talks to salvage her career comeback.

‘Katy is freaking out right now because she is very aware of the feedback that Woman’s World is getting,’ the insider stated. ‘She is pointing the fingers at everyone but herself, but it is her own fault.’

Perry collaborated with music producer, Dr. Luke, who has been embroiled in drama with singer Kesha after she accused him of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse.

Both Katy and Dr. Luke have worked together in the past on hit tracks such as I Kiss A Girl. But the source added, ‘She was insane to think that Dr. Luke was a good idea.’

‘Instead of diving deep and creating art she put something out that sounded like it could have been on an album of hers from 2010.’

‘You don’t make a song about female empowerment with basically all men. Katy cannot identify with other women because she lives in her celebrity bubble. She knows nothing about what it is like to be a woman in the real world.’

The source continued, ‘She is not using her star power to make change in the world – she is using it to make money.’

Perry soon came to the defense of her Woman’s World music video and explained that it had intended to be both ‘slapstick’ and ‘sarcastic.’

While taking to Instagram, she shared a behind-the-scenes look while filming the visuals, and said, ‘We’re kind of just having fun, being a bit sarcastic with it. It’s very slapstick and very on the nose.’

‘With this set it’s like, “Oooh, we’re not about the male gaze, but we really are about the male gaze.” And we’re really overplaying it and on the nose.’
