We think we know the next Resident Evil remake – and fans may be disappointed

New evidence has surfaced relating to another potential Resident Evil remake.

The Resident Evil series has been on a bit of a roll for the last several years with the newer titles continuing to up the ante and Capcom simultaneously giving its older entries a completely new lick of paint. With Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 all receiving full-on remakes in the last few years, it seems less of a question of if more titles will get a remake and more a question of when.

While Capcom hasn’t confirmed that additional classic remakes of Resident Evil games are currently in the works, a recent discovery on the ESRB website could point towards which game the publisher is looking at refreshing next.

As spotted by Kotaku , a listing for Resident Evil 5 seems to have appeared on the rating board’s website. This is separate from the listings for the original RE5 game, with the new entry seemingly only relating to the Xbox Series X|S.

This could be taken as a sign that Resident Evil 5 is next up on the list to get a remake. It would make sense on paper, with Capcom continuing up the numerical order and prioritising it after 4’s immense success three years ago.

That’s despite the fifth entry being considered one of the weaker games in the series. Its plot follows Chris Redfield on a mission to investigate a biological agent in Africa, with the campaign fully playable in co-op.

However, there’s some bad news that throws a spanner into the works of this theory.

Since the page’s original discovery, we’ve learned that the page on ESRB actually dates back to February last year. What’s more, similar entries also appeared for Resident Evil 6 and Revelations around the same time.

Over 12 months on and Capcom is yet to announce anything related to those titles, which is usually what happens pretty soon after a rating board publishes a new listing.

Instead, there are several reports that seem to indicate Capcom is working on a remake of Resident Evil Code Veronica instead.

This comes from prominent Resident Evil leaker ‘Dusk Golem’, who writes on X: “I promise you RE5 is not greenlit to get remade right now, Code Veronica Remake is next.”

Reports of a Code Veronica remake being in the works is also corroborated by both IGN and MP1st . The title is reportedly planned for release in Q1 of 2027.

Code Veronica originally released in 2000 and directly followed up on the story of Resident Evil 2 and 3. It saw siblings Claire and Chris Redfield team up as they fight against a virus outbreak in Antarctica.

So, although we’ll no doubt be getting our Resident Evil fill when Requiem launches later this month, keep your eyes peeled for more horror-fuelled announcements from Capcom this year.
