What to do in This “Tiny Gem” of Central America

As a Belize travel specialist, I’ve had the pleasure of planning vacations to the country for several multigenerational families. While Belize is about the size of Massachusetts, this tiny gem offers a diverse range of experiences, from lush tropical rainforests and ancient Mayan cities to sun-soaked islands, all with a laid-back charm that appeals to all ages. Here is how I would plan the perfect trip to Belize.

What to See

A great way to see the waters of this beautiful country is from above. Families can take a scenic flight over the Great Blue Hole, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the second-largest barrier reef in the world, via Astrum Helicopters or Tropic Air. This bird’s-eye view allows visitors to witness its near-perfect circular shape and the stark contrast of its deep blue interior with the shallow turquoise waters surrounding it.

Dubbed ‘the best little zoo in the world,’ the Belize Zoo is the most diverse “reserve” in Central America, housing over 170 animals all native to the country. A visit to the zoo is the best way to get a glimpse into Belize’s wildlife and to understand why it is imperative to protect the habitats that sustain them.

You can also spot wildlife from the comfort of your hotel room or private catamaran, depending on where you are located. Whether sitting on a veranda at a jungle eco lodge or sailing along Belize’s azure waters, visitors are sure to see animals they’ve never seen before. From toucans and monkeys to manatees, dolphins, rays, and more, the wildlife in Belize is certain to keep the entire family entertained.

The country also boasts a rich heritage of archaeological sites. Travel across one of the last hand-cranked chain ferries to Xunantunich (Maiden of the Rock)—one of the region’s most legendary attractions. Atop “El Castillo,” which rises 130 feet above the jungle canopy, has beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and villages.

Activities for the Whole Family

One of the advantages of being in Belize is that activities can be as relaxed or adventurous as you wish. Families can enjoy a pontoon tour on the river to hidden waterfalls, or take part in rich cultural immersion through a chocolate-making workshop, cooking class, or traditional Garifuna drumming session.

For those craving time on the water, a private catamaran sailing excursion allows the whole family to relax, swim, or snorkel at their own pace. Inland, guided explorations through lush rainforests offer memorable adventures, with expert guides ensuring that every member of the family, from the littlest explorer to the most seasoned traveler, feels engaged and safe.

Where to Stay

Belize offers a wide selection of boutique hotels, eco lodges, and larger resorts, too. For multigenerational families, I typically recommend properties that strike a balance, allowing active family members to stay engaged while others have the chance to unwind in comfort.

In the Cayo District, The Lodge at Chaa Creek, Hidden Valley Wilderness Lodge, or Sleeping Giant Lodge offer a range of onsite activities to keep the young explorers engaged. Hidden Valley in particular is set on 7,200 sprawling acres, giving guests access to hiking trails, countless waterfalls, and several natural pools.

For beach time, the best picks for families include Naia Resort and Spa, Sirenian Bay Resort, Turtle Inn, and Ray Caye Island Resort. Each property provides easy access to the beach, and a variety of water-based adventures for an ideal family getaway.

Belize’s wealth of activities and sights ensures that each family member can find magic in its rainforests, islands, and wealth of experiences.
