Steve McClaren ‘seriously thinking’ about England return after surprise job offer

Steve McClaren is eyeing a return to England after leaving Jamaica and an opportunity has presented itself at Rotherham, who have just suffered relegation to League Two

Steve McClaren is considering an offer to return to English football and become the new director of football at Rotherham United.

Ex-England boss McClaren has been out of work since resigning as Jamaica coach in November after they failed to secure automatic qualification for this summer’s World Cup. The 64-year-old has not had a job on these shores since he was as assistant to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

He does have a host of experience in the Football League however having previously managed the likes of Derby and Nottingham Forest. His best work as a manager was when he held the reigns at Middlesbrough, with his efforts ultimately landing him the England job.

Rotherham will spend next season in League Two after a second relegation in three seasons, but the BBC reports that McClaren is attracted by the opportunity to work for the Yorkshire club.

McClaren is keen to get back involved in football and the Millers can offer him that opportunity. No agreement has yet been struck but the ex-England boss is seriously thinking about taking on the challenge.

McClaren has endured a mixed managerial career with his ill-fated spell as England boss sticking to his reputation. He failed to lead England to Euro 2008 after a loss to Croatia at Wembley, leading to dismissal after only two years in the role.

He would later recover to claim an unlikely Dutch title with FC Twente, beating the likes of Ajax and PSV, which earned him the job at Wolfsburg in Germany. He’s also held gigs with Newcastle, his last management job in the Premier League, and QPR.

Rotherham had yo-yoed between the Championship and League One for the best part of a decade. Since 2014 they’ve gained four promotions to the second tier, but been relegated four times. Their underwhelming season in League One means they now find themselves in the fourth tier of the football pyramid.

Not since 2013 have Rotherham been playing in League Two but they will seek to earn an immediate return. They went through a managerial change this season with Matt Hamshaw replaced by Lee Clark in March. National League side Hartlepool United are reportedly eyeing Clark as their next manager as his future with the Millers remains unclear.
