Jalen Brunson Finally Ends Viral Elmo Feud at Knicks Championship Parade

Jalen Brunson has finally ended his viral feud with Elmo. Few mascots have taken more heat during the NBA Finals than the beloved Sesame Street character, who found himself at the center of an unexpected controversy among Knicks fans. But during New York’s championship parade, Brunson appeared to offer Elmo a public pardon, bringing one of the internet’s strangest sports rivalries to a close.

However, not every championship celebration comes with an Elmo redemption arc, but New York apparently had room for one.

While the internet refused to let the furry red mascot off the hook, Jalen Brunson appeared ready to move on. During the Knicks’ championship ticker-tape parade, the Finals MVP was spotted holding and kissing an Elmo plush carrying a cardboard sign that read “Forgive me PLEASE” while standing beside the NBA trophy. The playful gesture reflected the same calm mindset Brunson later described on CBS Mornings, where he explained that he has always tried to remain “even-keeled” regardless of the moment.

“It was definitely a spur-of-the-moment thing, but no matter what, you have to understand the moment, what you’re doing, and what your main goal and focus are,” Brunson on CBS Mornings.

The unlikely saga began earlier this month when Elmo sparked backlash among Knicks fans after posting that he hoped “both teams have fun” during the NBA Finals between New York and San Antonio. The video amassed more than 27 million views as fans flooded social media with jokes, criticism, and memes aimed at the Sesame Street icon for refusing to pick a side. Even Elmo’s attempts to smooth things over, including a Knicks-themed apology and a light-hearted intervention from Cookie Monster, failed to quiet the backlash.

While Elmo may have earned Brunson’s forgiveness, the Spurs are still living with the consequences of facing him in the Finals.

Jalen Brunson’s historic finals run ended New York’s 53-year wait

Long before he was stealing the spotlight with Elmo, Jalen Brunson was busy delivering the performance of a lifetime. The Knicks captain powered his team to a 94-90 Game 5 win over Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs, ending the franchise’s 53-year championship drought since 1973 and securing his first Finals MVP award. Brunson dropped a staggering 45 points in the title-clinching contest, including 15 in the fourth quarter alone, and finished the series averaging 32.6 points, 4.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game.

With the Larry O’Brien Trophy finally back in New York, the celebrations quickly turned into a family affair. Brunson was joined at the championship parade by his wife, Dr. Alison “Ali” Marks Brunson, and their one-year-old daughter, Jordyn, as thousands of fans flooded the streets to celebrate the historic achievement. Several notable names, including Martha Stewart, Timothée Chalamet, Tracy Morgan, Mariska Hargitay, and Ben Stiller, also turned up for the festivities, eager to witness a celebration Knicks fans had waited more than five decades to experience.

However, with Brunson publicly accepting the mascot’s apology during the championship parade, one of the NBA Finals’ most unexpected storylines appears to be over.
