A classic British dessert has topped the list of the world’s top 50 ‘best frozen desserts’.
According to global restaurant guide Taste Atlas, it was traditional clotted cream ice cream – enjoyed for decades in the UK, as a way to cool down during the summer months – that won over other frosty sweet treats, including beloved Italian gelato.
In third, it was Dondurma – a Turkish ice cream marked by a uniquely chewy, melt-free texture.
It was followed by American frozen custard, Peruvian Cremolada (made by blending fresh fruit pulp with sugar and water) and Indian Kulfi.
Italian delicacies made up four of the top ten, with Gelato making up most of them.
The most liked flavour of the revered European ice cream was pistachio, which was ranked second, while hazelnut came in sixth.Â
Gianduia gelato – a combination of milk and hazelnut – was number eight, followed by Tartufo di Pizzo; a ball of ice cream around a melted chocolate filling, rolled in bitter cocoa powder.
The top 50 also included American brownie sundaes, South Korean Patbingsu – a shaved ice dessert – Puerto Rican ‘Limber’, made up of coconut milk, pineapple juice, and sweeteners, and French parfait.
Meanwhile, clotted cream ice cream wasn’t the only British dish to get a showing – with Knickerbocker Glory coming in at 44th place.Â

The online food guide compiled users’ ‘top rated’ dishes in the frozen desserts category to compile the list, describing the winning treat as ‘decadent’.
‘Clotted cream ice cream is a traditional ice cream that’s associated with Cornwall, although it’s sold in supermarkets throughout the United Kingdom,’ it shared.
‘This ice cream is made with Cornish whole milk, eggs, and clotted cream. The use of Cornish clotted cream gives the ice cream a unique flavor and a velvety consistency.
‘This decadent ice cream can be flavored with various additional ingredients such as vanilla, and it can be found in many bars and cafes across the region.
‘It is also not uncustomary to add a dollop of clotted cream on top of the scoops of Cornish ice cream.’
However, Britons appeared far from patriotic in the Taste Atlas Instagram comments, branding the victory ‘bulls**t’.
‘100 per cent a Brit wrote this,’ one penned, while another added: ‘Agreed, what the heck is clotted cream ice cream?
‘Plus no way would it beat Italian gelato! Or a delicious Aussie passionfruit pavlova.’
Elsewhere a third Briton even suggested that ‘Viennetta should be number one’.
It comes as Aldi sold more than 2.5million units of ice cream between last Monday and Wednesday across Britain as the heatwave gripped the nation.Â
The German supermarket chain said sales of ice cream across its shops rose by 144 per cent week-on-week.Â
Aldi said sales of barbecue staples have surged during the current heatwave.Â
The chain said it sold 80 per cent more smash burgers and quarter pounders this week than in the same week a year ago.Â
Approximately 80,000 hotdogs were sold in Aldi shops last week alone, the supermarket said.Â
With the World Cup football tournament in full swing, beer sales have also risen sharply.Â
