Netflix will remove a ‘masterpiece’ thriller that fans warn contains ‘graphic violence’

The thriller has been dubbed a “masterpiece” as it remains a firm favourite with viewers

Netflix fans have just weeks left to watch a terrifying “masterpiece” that still manages to scare viewers decades on.

Copycat is a 1995 psychological thriller film that follows a criminal psychologist who develops severe agoraphobia after surviving an attack by a serial killer. She is forced to overcome her fear when she agrees to help two detectives hunt for a copycat killer who intends on making her their next victim.

Having been released on Netflix last year in the UK, the thriller was given a new lease of life 30 years since its initial release, starring Sigourney Weaver as well as Harry Connick Jr, Holly Hunter and Dermot Mulroney.

A Netflix synopsis reads: “A criminal psychologist and a detective put their lives on the line when they search for a serial killer copying the crimes of notorious murderers.”

However, Netflix subscribers do not have long left to watch the film as it is set to be removed from the streaming platform on June 14.

Copycat remains a firm favourite amongst viewers, even decades on from its release. Previously sharing a clip to Facebook, captioned: “One of the scariest opening scenes of all-time”, one Netflix viewer replied: “I couldn’t sleep for a fortnight after watching that film. Hell would freeze over before I watched that again!”

Another penned: “Omg. This scene still haunts me and I think of it everytime I go into a public bathroom.”

With a score of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, one reviewer said: “A really enjoyable psychological horror thriller similar to Silence of the Lambs. Although I liked Copy Cat just as much and the cast was fantastic!”

Another added: “Very, very underrated thriller. I’ve seen it a few times – it’s not as good as silence of the lambs, but it’s the same type of movie and really pretty good – if you liked lambs, watch this, you’ll enjoy it. Beware – a little scary, graphic violence.”

Over on IMDb, one viewer said it was “one of the best serial killer movies”, adding: “Copycat is dark and unexpectedly intelligent — it is also perfectly cast.”

Another stated: “I haven’t seen this film in over twenty years, and it remains an exciting and tense thriller. If you have a good knowledge of serial killers, it’ll be a bonus, as it’ll help you understand some of the references.”

A third added: “This is an overlooked, intelligent, frightening thriller. It poses a sick, shrewd serial killer against a brilliant psychologist/writer/professor (Weaver) and an attractive team of cops.”

Another branded it a “masterpiece that takes you inside the mind of a serial killer.”, as they continued: “Copycat is that rare film that comes along every other year or so that has the ability to pull you into it.

“It takes you on a most terrifying journey into the mind of a serial killer and the doctor that understands him. I can’t say anything more, except that I love this film. Hitchcock would’ve been proud.”

Copycat can be streamed on Netflix.
